ANTIQUE TRADE IN DOSOLEDO

In Cadore there is a village that important antiquarians - not only from the north of Italy - have been visiting discretely for decades. This village is Dosoledo, where about ten antique dealers, majority with the same surname “Sacco”, offer original antique furniture and objects. The two pioneer brothers Giovannino and Bruno Sacco were tinsmiths like many others from the same village. They often went to the farmsteads of nearby Val Pusteria looking for copper pans and pots which they would then tin-plate. It was a hard life, with scanty earnings. Aluminium was starting to substitute copper and this meant their job would soon have no future. The two brothers noticed that in the refined antique shops of Bolzano, wardrobes, cupboards for linen, desks and art objects were sold at very high prices. These items were similar to those they saw abandoned in the hay-lofts of the farmsteads they used to visit. Therefore, they started to buy antique objects and furniture, often bartering them for more captivating and colourful Formica ones. Their fathers' hay-lofts and houses in Dosoledo started to fill up with unusual objects, attracting the attention of the few tourists passing by and the curiosity of the village people. The turnover of the brothers' business increased quickly with the frequent visits of town antiquarians and architects. Other relatives in the village, with the surname “Sacco” who were also tinsmiths in the past, followed in the footsteps of the pioneers giving life to a prestigious and flourishing development in antique trade, which has made Dosoledo famous in the world of art.
